WELLFLEET — After a unanimous vote at the annual town meeting to prohibit town purchases of plastic bottled beverages, Wellfleet is taking the next step by eliminating the use of plastic at its annual road race on Sunday, July 7.
The town’s Recreation Department made this change with the support of the recycling committee along with the Cape Cod nonprofit, Sustainable Practices, according to a press release from Vic Roberts, communications director of Sustainable Practices.
Sustainable Practices successfully championed the Municipal Plastic Bottle Ban in five towns this spring. Water will be provided in paper cups as well as in aluminum cans supplied by Open Water, a water canning company that donates a portion of its revenue to fund plastic removal from the ocean.
“This is a popular annual event for Wellfleet and this is our 45th year; we are excited to move away from plastic water containers and encourage our community to do the same thing,” stated Becky Rosenberg, director of the Wellfleet Recreation Department.
The five-mile race starts at Mayo Beach located at 101 Kendrick Avenue in Wellfleet. Race categories for men and women are divided by age groups: 13 to 18, 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 and up. It will also include a wheelchair division and a 1.2-mile Children’s Fun Run Race.
Registration on race day ends at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee for the adult race is $25 and the children’s race registration is $20. For more information contact the rec. department (508) 349-0314.
